St Francis Xavier by Murillo

It is traditional to pray the Novena for a particular intention; to ask for what you desire from God.

In these difficult times, many people will have their own special intentions. Pray for your own needs, those of your loved ones, or the needs of the world.

In asking God for favours or graces, we acknowledge that God is the giver of all gifts. We come faithfully for the nine days of the Novena to pray for the grace we most need at this time.

All will be well, all manner of things will be well.” – Julian of Norwich

Background
Born in Xavier (Javier), a small village in Navarre in the north of Spain, Francis (1506-1552) was one of the founding members of the Society of Jesus. He led an extensive mission into Asia, most notably in India and Japan.

The first Novena of Grace of Francis Xavier is said to have taken place in Goa, India, in 1615, when a boy, crippled from birth, was cured. After Francis Xavier was named a Saint on 12th March 1622, the Novena of Grace grew in popularity around the world. It reached Ireland in 1712 when it was first celebrated in Mary’s Lane Chapel in St Michan’s Parish, Dublin.

Pilgrim God, we give you thanks and praise.
You constantly journey with us even in our darkness and doubts.
We seek your way of loving kindness to walk together as one family.
Open our eyes to recognise you in the faces of one another,
in the breaking of bread and in the splendour of creation.
May the risen Christ sow seeds of hope and new life deep within us.
May our hearts and minds be filled with your Word, bringing forth truth, justice and peace.
May the Holy Spirit working in and through us do much more
than we can dare to imagine as we live out our baptismal calling in humble and loving service.
We make this our prayer through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us.
St Laurence O’Toole, pray for us.
St Kevin, pray for us.
St Brigid, pray for us.
